His son George acquired a superioreducation for the times, and studied law,which he practised first in Elmira, , andafterward in Bath, Steuben County, where hewas County Judge for many years, and occu-pied a high position in the regard of his fel-low-citizens, both on account of his legalknowledge and because of his sterling per-sonal character. He died at the age of and his wife Hannah reared seven childrenout of a family of eight; namely, Mary,George, Jesse, Clarissa, Alexander, Mason,and John. The mother spent her last yearsin Bath, and died at the age of ALEXANDER EDWARDS. BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW 597 Alexander Edwards remained in Bath untilthe age of eighteen. Having received hisearly education in the district school, he en-joyed the additional advantage of attending aselect school in that place. He then went toHornellsville, and engaged as clerk in a largecountry store, where he remained three years,and acquired a knowledge of businessmethods. He then went to Penn Yan for ayear, and from there to Hammondsport forthe same period, after which he returned toBath, and passed a year amid the scenes of hisboyhood. On September i, 1847, he came toDansville, and obtained a position as clerk, atwhich occupation he remained until 1849,when he went into business for himself, tak-ing as partner Mr. Matthew McCartney. Thefirm continued in trade until 1855, when withdrew, and Mr. Edwards con-ducted the business alone for two y
