Even a historically prosperous town as Abingdon always had its poor and destitute. These medieval Alms Houses, by the historic St Helens Church, were built to house them. Erected by the Fraternity of the Holy Cross in 1446, these are commonly referred to as the Long Alley Alms houses. No guesses why! They have been listed as English Heritage Buildings.
