Plaster Moulding of a Lion protecting Sri Mariamman Temple on Pagoda Street Singapore

The Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, and was founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai, eight years after the British East India Company established a trading settlement in Singapore. Although Pagoda Street is in Chinatown, informally, Chinatown residents referred to Pagoda Street in Chinese as "back of the Indian place of worship."
