Palaeolithic Tanana River settlement. Illustration of hunters returning to a settlement on the Tanana River in what is now Alaska, USA. They are carrying birds and fish. Others are butchering the carcass of a large prehistoric deer and cooking the meat on a fire. Animal hides and plant materials are being used to construct huts in the background. Hunters are seen in the river at upper left. The scene shown here is based on fossils and other artifacts recovered from the Paleo-Arctic cultures that inhabited the area. This scene dates from around 14,000 years ago.
