The pipes arethen laid in the tile and covered over with the same mixturebefore the top cover is put on. • All joints must be carefully sealed with Portlandcement mortar and made watertight. The tile should be vitrified, salt-glazed, sewer tile andlarge enough to allow for a four-inch covering all aroundthe pipe. INSULATION 195 Where the underground mains carry brine at a verylow temperature, it is better to use the compressed insteadof the granulated cork covering, in order to reduce thesize of the tile. The same method of insulation can be used and a2-inch plank-box substituted for the tile.
