Escape in Eight-Foot Kayak. Cuban refugee Lauriano Yglesias and his girl friend, Consuelo Rivera Luiz, escaped Cuba in this homemade eight foot kayak and were picked up by the Coast Guard Cutter Shoalwater on 13 September 1966, about 34 miles east of Marathon, Florida. The craft was powered by a lawn mower engine.
