The huge Mandapa in the centre of the Wat Si Chum complex features a 15 metre high seated Buddha called Phra Achana. It was built in the late 14th century by King Maha Thammaracha II. The walls of the Mandapa are three feet thick. Inside the south wall is a staircase leading to the roof. According to legend the Sukhothai kings would boost the morale of their armies by climbing the staircase and addressing them through a hole causing them to believe the voice was that of the Buddha.
