Theeastern half is nearly level at the top, and the whole area is not farfrom twenty acres. From the summit of tliis bold headland the prospect is varied andextensive, embracing fine views of portions of this, and some of theneighboring towns ; of the salt-marsh stretching off to the west andsouthwest, almost as far as the eye can-reach, and beautilied by theraeanderings of the river ; of the blue summit of Againenticus, far offin Maine; of various points along the coast from Cape Neddock, inMaine to Cape Ann, in Massachusetts; of the Isles of Shoals; andlastly, of the ocean itself, apparently limitless, bearing upon its bosomthe white sails of commerce, and with waves, sometimes but gentleundulations, sportively chasing each other landward and laving theshore with a soothing murmur, and sometimes lashed into the wildestcommotion by the tempest, rolling in and breaking uponhistoryoftownofh00dowj
