After anaction of an hour and a half, the enemywere driven from the field, on which theconquerors encamped for the night. Theloss of the Californians was severe. This battle, fought by the seamen andmarines of Commodore Stockton, is justlyregarded as one of the most extraordinaryexploits of the whole Mexican war, which,as we have seen, abounded in all sorts ofromantic and heroic GENERAL SHIELDS AT CERROGORDO. General James Shields distinguishedhimself in several battles during theMexican war, and was severely woundedupon two occasions. In the great battleof Cerro Gordo, General Shields, withhis brigade of volunteers, was directedto storm the height west of the principalbattery of the Mexicans, which com-manded the Jalapa road. The order waspromptly and bravely executed. Thevolunteers advanced up the height withall the steadiness and courage of vete-rans, and carrying the height drove theenemy along the Jalapa road. As Ge-neral Shields was advancing with his (187) 188 GENERAL SHIELDS AT CERRO GORDO. men, lie was shot through the paralyzed him, and he was carriedoff the field. The wound was at firstthought to be mortal, but it happilyproved to be otherwise.
