View looking north west from the bridge abutment on the Roman road leading from south east gate of Tomen y Mur C1stAD auxiliary fort. Before crossing the stream, the road passes through a civilian settlement with remains of a bathhouse to south west (Left) & a guest house (mansio) to north east (Right). The Norman castle motte is built over the Roman fort's north west gate. The pre-motte site features as Mur y Castell in the story of Math fab Mathonwy (Fourth Branch of The Mabinogi).
