His paternalgrandparents were Benjamin and Rebecca (Town-ley) Haines, and those on the maternal side wereSamson Vryling Stoddard and f^lecta (Barrell)W ilder. His preparatory studies were pursuedat the private school of Rev. John F. Pingry, ,. FRANCIS S. of Elizabeth, and after taking his Bachelors degreeat Princeton in 1878, he entered the Union Theo-logical Seminary, from which he was graduated in1883. Having received his license to preach fromthe Presbytery of Elizabeth, he was ordained by theClassis of Montgomer), New York, and installedPastor of the Reformed Church at Canajoharie,March 25, 18S4.
