The outlet from the exhaust valve isconnected by piping to the silencer, while to the air suctioninlet is coupled a pipe through which the air is drawn fromthe atmosphere. This consists virtually of a closed cylinderwith a number of very narrow longitudinal slits arrangedusually in two sections as shown, and by this means theaccess of dust is prevented, while the noise due to the rushof the incoming air is reduced to a minimum.
