This image may not be used to state or imply endorsement by CERN of any product, activity or service Aerial photograph of the site of CERN, the European Centre for Nuclear Research, showing the outline of the underground Super-Proton- Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator (white dotted line). Geneva & the French Alps are beyond. As well as being employed as an ordinary accelerator, the SPS has also been used since 1983 as a collider, accelerating protons in one direction & antiprotons in the opposite direction within the same circular beam pipe. The resulting proton/antiproton collisions led to the discovery in 1983 & 1984 of the W & Z particles, mediators of the weak nuclear force.
