The section has revealed the internal space (vertebral canal) for the spinal cord (not shown). The spaces between each spinal bone (vertebra) is where discs of cartilage cushion the spine as it bends. Down centre, are unsectioned vertebrae of changing shape and size; from top: two thoracic (upper back) vertebrae; the final thoracic vertebra (like a lumbar vertebra); and two lumbar (lower back) vertebrae.
