Medieval wall painting of St Catherine of Alexandria in a partly blocked, widely splayed Norman window at Hailes Church, Gloucestershire, England, UK. The recess is beside the altar in the north wall of the chancel (sanctuary). Below are two aumbries used to store sacred altar vessels & the Blessed Sacrament. The church was founded in the C12th by the Norman lord Ralph de Worcester. The wall paintings are probably late C13th or early C14th, certainly after the adjacent Hailes Abbey was founded in 1245/6 by Richard, Earl of Cornwall. The church acted as a Capella Ante Portas (chapel before the gates) where pilgrims would pray before entering the abbey. The C4th Christian martyr St Catherine was beheaded after being tortured on a wheel (Catherine wheel) which broke down.
