Bassilica du Sacre-Coeur, Montmartre, Paris, France

Montmartre is a large hill in Paris's 18th arrondissement. It is 130 m (430 ft) high and gives its name to the surrounding district, part of the Right Bank in the northern section of the city. Montmartre is known for its artistic history, the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur on its summit, and as a nightclub district. Full of bars, cafes and restaurants, tourists and dine, dink and snack in historical and atmospheric surrounds. Designed by Paul Abadie, the building style is ROMANO-BYZANTINE, inspired by churches such as Saint Sofia in Constantinople and San Marco in Venice. The exterior travertine stone, known as ‘Château-Landon’, comes from the Souppes-sur-Loing quarry in Seine et Marne and is particular in that it is extremely hard with a fine grain and exudes calcite on contact with rainwater, making it white. Construction was between 1875 – 1919. Bronze statues of King St Louis (the only French monarch to be canonised) and Joan of Arc stand guard above the main entrance.
