The one thing we doknow is that he was a painter par excellenceand that his pictures express the living, phys-ical beauty of humanity to the very acme ofsensuous pleasure. We are bound to admit, as we look at Ve-nus and Adonis (Fig. 225), that Correggiolacks strength in portraying the deeper emo-tions of life, yet his figures are alive and allplay a definite part in the composition.
