A male (Drake) Mallard dabbling duck, one of the many forms of birds to be found near Threave Castle on the River Dee near Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The castle stands on an island and is only accessible by a small boat ride. It was built in the 1370s by Archibald the Grim and was a stronghold of the "Black Douglases", Earls of Douglas and Lords of Galloway. The keep and artillary house remain standing. After a seige during in the Bishop's War The Covenanters ordered the buildings to be dismantled, and the materials to be disposed for use by the public.
