Electric Railway at Asheville, N. C. The view presented in the accompanying en-graving of the Sprague Electric railway at Ashe-ville, N. C, shows three cars on this electricrailway in operation upon the main street ofAsheville. Besides an equipment of passengercars this electric railway company also possessesseveral freight cars operated by electric motorsof the Sprague type, and as this railway con-nects the city of Asheville with the depot of theNorth Carolina R. R., these freight cars haveproved a convenience to the citizens of the city,as well as a source of considerable income to themanagers of the road. The regular Sprague system of wiring is usedon this line, and all the overhead work is so lightand small that it is difficult to discern it at all inthe accompanying illustration, which is madefrom a photograph taken on the .Sprague Electric R.\tl\vay at .\sheville. Another contract closed by this same companyis in Wichita, Kansas, where 7^ miles and fourcars will soon be running by electricity upon thissystem. 16 horse power improved motors will beused, and the equipment will be first class inevery respect. Another street railway to adopt electricity as amotive power for their cars is the Electric Rail-way company of Eau Claire, Wis. We are in-formed that this contract calls for the furnishingof six cars over five miles of track. The regularSprague overhead system will be used, using asmall No. 6 wire as a working conductor, nolarger than an ordinary telephone wire, which isthe only wire suspended over the track.
