This almost bloodless revolution had a powerful influence upon the futuredestiny of Switzerland, and laid the foundation for that compact of freedomwhich has withstood the successive earthquake shocks of revolutions that ibrfive hundred years have repeatedly convulsed Europe to its very centre. Andto every Schwitzer the name of William Tell is as familiar and dear, as is thememory of Washington to us. He left behind him a name that grows brighteras the principles of civil liberty are more widely diffused; and at Kussnachtnear the spot where Gesler fell by his hand, piety and patriotism have erecteda chapel to his PETRARCH.
