Sinbad and The Roc
Sinbad the Sailor is of Middle Eastern origin. His tale is, in modern times, often connected with and/or included in The Thousand and One Nights or the Arabian Nights, but it originally was not part of it. One of the fantastic creatures that Sinbad tells attacked his ship was a giant mythical bird called the roc. This 1902 illustration shows two rocs attacking and throwing stones at Sinbad's ship, shipwrecking him.
