Thenerve centre controls the two movements and the change from oneto the other much as a motorman stops and starts his car, so as toavoid sudden jolts and still secure results promptly. We see thedifference when we notice how a sigh is produced, simply by sud-denly and completely relaxing- the muscles of inspiration when thekmgs are full; the characteristic sound is made b}^ the sudden rushof air out through the nose when the elastic forces that empty thelungs are suddenly released, in marked contrast with the almostnoiseless manrer of normal breathing. Yawning is similar in thisway to sighing, being a full inspiration followed by a sudden relax-ation
