François Pascal Simon Gérard (1770-1837), titled as Baron Gérard French school Napoléon Ier, empereur des Français en grand costume du sacre Napoleon I in coronation costume, as Emperor of the French 1805 Oil on canvas (223 x 143 cm) Versailles, châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon

Napoleon is represented in foot according to the tradition of the official royal portrait. However, he wore a new vestment (1804) and new insignia of power (regalia). The purple colour of the mantle, the laurel crown and the eagle attach it to the Roman Empire, while the sceptre, the hand of justice and the globe are contemporary creations commissioned from the goldsmith Biennais (1764-1843). The Legion d'Honneur replaces the order of the Holy Spirit.
