Several weeks were spent intrying to discover the cause of this unsteadiness. At first itwas ascribed to sudden slight changes in temperature. To avoidthese, each cell was placed in a box of heavy pasteboard and care-fully packed in cotton batting. The box containing the cell whichwas placed in the magnetic field was cut away on both sides to admitthe pole pieces of the magnet. This did not permit it to be quiteas well protected as
