A characteristic interest attaching to this tree is the profusion of very long catkins which appear in earliest spring, even before our native poplars are in bloom. They appear at Ithaca late in March or the first of April. The staminate or male catkins are particu- larly pleasing, and planters should se- lect that sex, if pos- sible.
