Ancient monuments. 16th-century artwork of an obelisk (left) and a pyramid-shaped structure (centre), next to a tree. Obelisks were tall monuments erected in the temples of Ancient Egypt, and adopted by later cultures such as the Romans. Pyramids were built in a number of cultures, most famously as tombs for the pharaohs, rulers of Ancient Egypt. This artwork is from 'Opera' (1580), a 1000-page posthumous collection of the works of Dutch physician and linguist Jan Becan (1518-1572).
