The history of ancient manuscript-writing, missals,^i^ and illuminations is pursued ; also the history of printing, and details of theprinters and publishers part in the making of books. After these preliminary studies, apoet is taken up and some of his representative works critically inquired into with referenceto their sources, their background, and their growth, as illustrating the development of thepoets verse-craft.
