Loch an Eilein Aviemore

Loch-an-Eilein - a place steeped in history, set in Rothiemurchus within one of the largest remaining ancient Caledonian Forests. Roe deer and red squirrels are seen quite often within these forests, and there is plenty of birdlife, butterflies as well as interesting plant life to see. Loch an Eilein is a loch within the Rothiemurchas Forest about three miles south of Aviemore. In the middle of the loch is a small island with the remains of a 15th century castle on it. The castle was once a stronghold of the Wolf of Badenoch and was also the last place that ospreys nested before becoming extinct in Britain for nearly 40 years.
