Whelk
The whelk is a sea snail which is carnivorous or a scavenger; it does not eat algae, unlike the conch which it resembles. Many kinds of whelks have historically been used, or are still used, by humans for food. Although many whelks are quite large and are in the family Buccinidae (the true whelks) the word whelk is also applied to some other marine gastropod mollusc species within several, not very closely related, families of sea snails.
