Sadly, many of Jeddah's old coral houses with their elegant wooden balconies (mashrabiyya) -- many of which date back 150 years or more -- are in a sorry state. There is, however, a movement underway to preserve the historic structures, most of which were built by wealthy traders, Old Jeddah (Al-Balad), Saudi Arabia.
