Descriptive and illustrated catalogue of fruit and ornamental trees shrubs, plants, etc., etc., Nurseries (Horticulture) Connecticut Middletown Catalogs; Fruit Seeds Catalogs; Flowers Seeds Catalogs. 38 ILLUSTRATED AND DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE ^Selegt^aspberries. Coming immediately after strawberries, when there is a dearth of other fresh fruits, Raspberries are equally desirable for planting in the garden for home use, and in the field for market. They are easily cultivated. Beds seldom require renewing. Their season of ripening is long. The fruit bears transportation well, and aside from the de- mand for it for immediate consumption, it brings highly remunerative prices for drying and canning. Plant in good soil, and manure from time to time freely. The hills should not be less than four feet apart each way, with two or three plants in a hill. Cut out the old and weak shoots each year, preserving not over six for fruiting. If the location is so much exposed that the plants are inclined to kill down seriously, they may be bent over in the fall, on mounds of earth formed at one side of the hills and covered sufficiently to keep them down until spring. Surplus suckers take strength from the bearing plants. They should be cut away or hoed up frequently. CLASS AND YELLOW VARIETIES. Brandywine iSusquecoi— Large : bright red ; very firm.
