Memorial to the Republican fighters in the Spanish Civil War from North Lanarkshire in Duchess of Hamilton Park, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

The memorial is dedicated to the volunteers from North Lanarkshire who went to Spain to fight for the anti-Franco Republican forces "against fascism and in defence of liberty and democracy" The Republican government had been elected but was seen by many as extreme left-wing and apparently anti the Catholic Church so the Nationalist, who were extreme right wing, rebelled against them -successfully, resulting in a hard line regime under Fransico Franco. The Republican cause was popular in many other European countries and many people went to Spain to fight for them. There are many memorials to people who went to Spain to fight for the Republican side, few or none to those who fought for Franco (there were some who did)
