From these rooms many pas-sages led in various directions, one or more ex-tending into the ground; so that, while the boyssurrounded the nest and were jubilant in theanticipation of capturing the inhabitants, the lat-ter all escaped, passing down the undergroundpassage and coming out at a pile of rocks a hun-dred feet away, where, the boys supposed lateron, they sat and watched the proceedings.
