H., but enlisted on Sep-tember 9, in Company A, Eighth New Hampshire. AtFort Macomb, La., he was detailed as nurse in the regi-mental hospital, and remained in that position until June,1863, when he returned at Port Hudson, La., to duty inCompany A. At Franklin, La., on January i, 1864,. CORPORAL STEPHEN WILLIAMS, CO. A. New Hampshire Volunteers. 373 he re-enlisted for three years and was appointed ascorporal in said company. He was, after that, in all theskirmishes, marches, and battles in which his companyparticipated and fortunately escaped being taken prisoneror being wounded. In January, 1865, being one of thesupernumerary non-commissioned officers he was dis-charged. He is at this date, 1891, a farmer and settled inthe town of Derry, N. H. The veterans are much indebted to Captain Prescott forhis clear and concise accounts of the movements of theEighth Regiment in this campaign. It is the basis ofrecital, the centre around which other reports are is thought best to keep a general view of the campaignso that what the Eighth did shall be shown in strongerlight, and if maps, such as the government publishes, areadded, the situation and work of the organization will beseen still clearer.
