TEMPERATURE CHANGES IN DIMENSIONS Ames dials (an instrument so constructed thatmovements as minute as 1-10,000 of an inch are de-tected) were fitted with a special iron jacket andused in measuring temperature changes through-out the entire width of a slab at two-foot intervals, and along both edges of the slab (which was 150feet in length) at 6-foot intervals. Observationswere carried on for a considerable period, the mostimportant ones being obtained when the day waswarm and the nights quite cool. The results from these observations were a sur-prise to many of the engineers. At 1 P. M. one sideof the slab was turned down .008 inch below thehorizontal level of the slab and at the same hourthe center of the slab was raised
