Partly astonished at the sight of the silver, andmore so at my want of caution, the Lamas, of whom therewas a good number in the court-yard, remained motion-less and mute. The High Lama, or Father Superior ofthe Monastery, at last came forward, stooping low, and ENTRANCE TO THE TUCKER TEMPLE placing one thumb above the other, with his tongue hang-ing out to show his superlative approval of my visit tothe many images representing deities or sanctified Bud-dhist heroes which were grouped along the walls of thetemple. The largest of these were about five feet high,the others about three feet. Some were carved out ofwood, their drapery and ornaments being fairly artistic inarrangement and execution, while others were fashioned 276 INTERIOR OF THE TEMPLE in gilt metal. There were a number in a sitting postureand some standing erect, and they all rested on ornament-ed pedestals or plainer bases painted blue, red, white, andyellow. Many wore the ancient Chinese double-wingedcap, as used to this day by Corean officials, and wereplaced in recesses in the wall decorated with stuffs, woodcarvings, and rough paintings of images.
