3 gravid dark phase Timber Rattlesnakes basking at rookery area in rock field near den.

3 gravid Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus horridus). Gravid female Timber Rattlesnakes emerge from the den and move to their rookery area where they remain all summer until they give birth. Rookery areas are typically but not always near the overwintering den. Gravid Timber Rattlesnakes do not feed but bask all summer long to facilitate the development of their young. These females are basking in a rock field in northcentral Pennsylvania.
