These systems are so arranged that the condensed water is returned to the boilers to beagain converted into steam, thus producing a circulation. There are between 8000 and 9000 feet ofradiating pipe distributed through all the heating chambers. If a rapid circulation through the radiatingpipes is desired, for the purpose of raising thetemperature of the building in a comparativelyshort time, it is effected by opening a blow-offcock which discharges into a sewer; or bymeans of a steam-pump, so arranged as to takethe water from the condensed water pipes andforce it into the boilers. This pump is also usedfor supplying the boilers with water when thepressure of steam is too great to do so from thereservoir. In the third story of the wing is an iron tank,of a capacity of 1200 gallons, in which the water for washing and bathing purposes is heated bypi 1 r~ means of a coil which is supplied with steam from the boilers O G, a distance of 200 feet. The boilers also supply the steam for cooking the food for tho inmates. In the kitchen are twoboilers of 95 gallons each, and one of about 50 gallons; in these the food is cooked. There is no fire in the west half of the Asylum excepting under the boilers G G, and a small cooking-stove for preparing food for the sick. The cubical contents of the building warmed, without deducting partition walls, stairways, <fec, is780,000 cubic feet; the amount actually warmed by the apparatus, deducting partition walls, stairways,&c, is 730,000 cubic feet, or 90 rooms and 6 halls.
