Terra Nova Antarctic birthday party. Officers and members of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) at the birthday party held for the expedition leader Royal Navy officer Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912, aged 43, at head of table). The party was held in their base camp hut on 6 June 1911. The menu would include food not normally eaten at other times. Sledging flags are shown overhead. Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole. Photographed by Herbert George Ponting.
