Engineer inspecting newly laid trackwork in a Jubilee Line Extension tunnel on the London Underground Tube network.
The Jubilee Line Extension was the first underground railway in the UK to use rails that are welded together (although this is common on overground railways and in underground metro system in other countries). This 'continuously welded rail' (CWR) was manufactured in 18m lengths, four sections were thermit welded together on the surface and the resulting 72m rail was delivered to the tunnels on special rail wagons. Once installed, the long lengths were also welded together to produce a continuous track without joints. The Jubilee Line Extension tunnel track uses two advanced designs for noise and vibration suppression: a padded connector on a precast sleeper embedded in concrete for most of the tunnel and a boat-shaped floating slab for particularly sensitive stretches beneath Westminster and Pall Mall. The Jubilee Line covers ( miles) and serves 27 stations between Stanmore and Stratford. The equivalent statistic for the new extended section is 16km (10 miles) of which km ( miles) is in tunnel and km ( miles) on the surface. Work started on the £ billion project to extend the Jubilee line in December 1993. The extension runs from Green Park to Stratford and was opened in three phases during 1999.
