The pieces of brokendiamond are examined for the detection offragments suitable for gravers, drills, and etch-ing points. The remainder is crushed to animpalpable powder by several hours continuedwork, rotating the pestle between blows. When sufficient fineness is not attained by the mortar, the dust may beground between the concave and convex surfaces, c, d, of a hardened steelmill, a little oil being added to the dust.
