View of the odeon in the ancient ciyt of Gortyn (or Gortys or Gortyna) on Crete. The brick building at the back houses the Gortyn Law Codes. These were discovered in 1184 are are the oldest and most complete codes of Ancient Greek law yet discovered. They were written at the end of the 6th century BC. They are carved into stone and those on display at Gortyn are original. although other sectios of the code have been taken to other museums, for example The Louvre in is evidence that the site at Gorty has been occupied since at least 7000 BC during the Neotithic era. Minoan and Dorian artefacts dating from 1000BC have also been found on the site. The city is mentioned by both Homer and Plato. During Hellenistic times Gortyn was the most powerful and prosperous city in Crete. It continued to prosper into Roman times. In AD796 the city was hit by an earthquake that caused a vast amount of damage. In AD828 the city was destroyed by invading Arabs who established their own state on Crete.
