Henry VII's trial of weights and measures at the exchequer in 1497, a clerk, bottom right, is seen burning measures which do not come up to standard. Setting standards for weights and measures was neccessary to maintain commercial confidence in trade and penalties for selling short measure were severe. Henry VII, 1457 – 1509. King of England and Lord of Ireland. From Old England: A Pictorial Museum, published 1847.
