Compound eyes of dragonfly. Macrophotograph of the compound eyes of a dragonfly (Aeschna sp.). The compound eyes of dragonflies consist of up to 30,000 individual facets called ommatidia. Each facet sends a signal to the brain, which then constructs a mosaic view of the world. The image lacks the detailed resolution of human sight but is good at detecting movements. Dragonflies have unusually good sight for insects, enabling them to hunt on the wing. Aeschna species are among the largest and most beautiful dragonflies known. They are also called darners as a result of their mythical ability to sew children's mouth closed.
