Your suggested topic has put me in a reminiscent mood and my mind has run hack to my earlier days when Sa- frano, Isabella Sprunt and Niphetos were the three, and practically the only sorts that were at all amenable to forcing methods. We all know how extensively the above varieties were used in the sev- enties Then Bon Silene was added bv Boston growers and it held its own in the market with the above named varieties for several years. I well remember unpacking Cather- ine Mermet from a box of new roses received from France, and how this variety was taken up and forced by the Madison and other growers adja- cent to New York city.
