Warkworth Castle in Northumberland
Photograph shows Warkworth Castle as seen from banks of River Coquet in Northumberland. Warkworth Castle is a ruined castle, but considerable and impressive parts of the castle still remain including the keep, walls and gatehouse. It was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Henry II of England. Later its construction was improved in the 13th century during the reigns of King John and then King Edward I. The Northumberland Percy family took control of the castle in the 14th century, and retained it through descendancy until 1922 when it was given to the UK government. The castle is located on a small hill at the southern end of the village of Warkworth. The village is geographically positioned on a prominent meander in the lower reaches of the River Coquet and less than a mile from the North Sea coastline.
