This selection is made with the view of presenting likenessesof the more prominent characters in the States history, varioustypes of old mansions, forts of a century ago and historic scenes,each item dating previous to the year 1800. So prominent are these persons and places that their names areknown the breadth of the land, yet because of the extreme rarityof the old oil portraits and prints they have been seldom DEWITT CLINTON. The projector of the Erie Canal, who by his untiring efforts saw itopened from Lake Erie to the Hudson River on November 2, , 1817-23 and 1825-8; Mayor of New York, 1803-07, 1809-10,1811-15.
