Benjamin Gratz Brown (1826-1885) was an abolitionist that served as a colonel in the Union Army during the first half of the Civil War and as a Senator and Governor for the state of Missouri. He was also a vice-presidential candidate under Horace Greely in the 1872 presidential election. Brown expounded his anti-slavery views in the book he authored, titled "Immediate Abolition of Slavery." (Photo by Matthew Brady, c1865)
