Farming landscape in the Yorkshire Wolds near Malton, with Duggleby Howe Neolithic round barrow standing inside a ploughed-out causewayed enclosure. The large mound of chalk, quarried from the ditches of the surrounding enclosure, was placed over a smaller burial mound covering a rock-cut shaft grave. The site was in use for burials, and then cremations, for some 1200 years from around 3600 to 2400BC. The penannular earthwork enclosure covers hectares with causewayed ditches up to deep. In medieval times the mound was used as the base of a post-mill.
