It might be well to note here that kept some seeds alive by packing in charcoal, and thatthey germinated when planted several months later, but noone but a trained horticulturist would be likely to be suc-cessful with such an experiment. With regard to the plantingof the seed, it is well to remember that the first rains areoften times followed by a week or two of dry weather. It istherefore best to wait until at least four inches of rain havefallen, that is, when planting in heavy soil, and to have a re- 332 THE INDIA RUBBER WORLD [July i, COMPARISONOF SEEDS. On one of the plantations I was shown the result of a veryinteresting experiment, which was designed to show why oftwo seeds, planted near each other in apparentlyequally favorable positions, one produced a vigor-ous tree, while the othei produced a weakling. Todetermine this, the planter selected three sizes of seeds andplanted them under equal conditions, supposing naturally thatthe largest seed would produce the most vigorous plant. Helearned, however, that size had nothing to do with it, as in somecases the smallest seeds produced gave the best result. Thereal difference seems to be, therefore, in the inherent vitalityof the seed itself. There are a great many ideas regarding thebest way of planting the Castilloa, and there is no doubt butdifferent methods are adapted for difference of
